Preserving Primary Teeth: Pulpotomy and Stainless-Steel Crown

This hands-on course is designed for Dentists, Oral Health Therapists and Dental Therapists.

 

Course Overview

This course provides practitioners with the knowledge and hands-on skills required to effectively manage pulpally involved primary teeth using evidence-based techniques. Participants will learn to identify suitable cases, understand indications and contraindications, and perform pulpotomy procedures confidently. The session will also cover the selection, preparation, and placement of stainless steel crowns, including conventional and Hall techniques. By the end of the course, attendees will enhance their clinical competence in preserving primary teeth, maintaining arch integrity, and delivering high-quality paediatric restorative care.

 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

Pulpotomy

  1.  Understand indications and contraindications of pulpotomy for primary teeth preservation.
  2. Apply appropriate case selection criteria based on clinical and radiographic findings.
  3. Compare and evaluate pulp treatment options, including indirect pulp capping and pulpotomy, within an evidence-based framework.
  4. Develop hands-on proficiency in performing pulpotomy on primary teeth, including correct technique, medicament selection, and restoration planning.

Stainless Steel Crowns

  1. Identify indications and contraindications for stainless steel crowns in paediatric restorative care
  2. Learn optimal tooth preparation techniques to ensure adequate retention and marginal fit.
  3. Practise selection, adaptation, and fitting of stainless steel crowns on typodont teeth.
  4. Gain practical experience in the Hall crown placement technique as a minimally invasive restorative option.

Presenter biography

A/Prof Sobia Zafar
BDS, MSc, DClinDent, PhD, FICD, FPFA, SFHEA, MRACDS


Associate Professor Sobia Zafar is a specialist paediatric dentist, Discipline Lead in Paediatric Dentistry at The University of Queensland, and a Senior Research Fellow with the Child Health Research Centre. She serves as President of the Australia and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry (Queensland Section) and as Councillor for the IADR ANZ (Brisbane). She completed a DClinDent and PhD at the University of Otago, New Zealand.

Her research and clinical interests include dental education, digital dentistry, and children’s oral health, particularly for those with special needs. A frequent invited speaker nationally and internationally, she has authored 100+ publications, including peer-reviewed articles and a book chapter. She has supervised 60 Honours, five HDR (PhD/MPhil) and two DClinDent completions, receiving the Higher Degree Research “Best Research Supervisor” award in 2022 and 2023. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programs at UQ and delivers hands-on courses for the Australian Dental Association (Queensland Branch). Her contributions have been recognised with multiple UQ HABS commendations (2020–2022), a UQ Teaching Excellence (APEL) Commendation (2022), the ANZAHPE–Flinders Excellence in Health Professional Education Award (2023), and Fellowship of the Faculty of Dental Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2022).

Committed to community service, A/Prof Zafar deliver essential dental care to underprivileged children—including refugees, asylum seekers, those with special needs, and families experiencing disadvantage. Her leadership has been recognised with the UQ LeadHers Rise Community Award (2022) and a national Appreciation Award from Turbans4Australia (2022). She recently received “Distinguished Service Award” from the Australia Dental Association Queensland (2024) and Excellence in Research, Teaching, Supervision and Philanthropy Award from the Australia and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry Queensland (2024).
