This hands-on course is designed for Dentists, Oral Health Therapists and Dental Therapists.

Course Overview

Extracting teeth in children may not be easy - for the child as well as for the dentists. Paediatric dentist or not, you need to follow some basic steps when you are the extracting teeth in children. This course will cover the tips and techniques for administration of local anaesthesia and atraumatic extraction of primary teeth. This course explains and demonstrate the use of luxators and forceps for extraction of primary teeth.     
Child patient and case assessment 
Know your instruments, what to use and when 
Anaesthesia techniques and dose calculation for the children 
Interpreting radiographs 
When and who to refer 
Managing the broken root tip 
Suturing 
Post-operative care 

Learning Objectives

1. To identify extraction instruments (forceps, luxators)
2. To learn correct local anaesthetic technique and dose calculation for each extraction in a child patient
3. To demonstrate an understanding of mechanical principles in extractions of primary teeth
4. To demonstrate luxation technique for incisors, canines, and molars
5. To demonstrate forceps technique for incisors, canines, and molars

The training then involves a:
Video demonstration of extraction in children
Practical demonstration on simulation extraction models
Hands-on-training on simulation extraction models
Practical assessment 
Post training theoretical assessment.  

 

Presenter biography

Dr Sobia Zafar

BDS, MSc, DClinDent (Paediatric Dentistry), PhD, FICD, FPFA, FDTFEd, SFHEA, MRACDS (Paediatric Dentistry)
Sobia is a specialist paediatric dentist and a Discipline Lead in Paediatric Dentistry at The University of Queensland. She attained her master’s degree from the University of the Western Cape (South Africa) and subsequently a DClinDent and a PhD degree from the University of Otago (New Zealand). She is the president of Australia and New Zealand Society of Paediatric Dentistry Qld branch. Her research and clinical interests are in the fields of dental education, digital dentistry, and the oral and dental health of children including those with special needs, and she is frequently an invited speaker nationally and internationally on these subjects. She has over 100 publications, comprising of full papers, book chapters and published abstracts, in both national and international peer-review journals. Sobia has successfully supervised 40 DMD/BDSc (Hons) research projects, and currently supervising MPhil, DClinDent and PhD candidates. She has also conducted multiple hands-on courses for the Australian Dental Association Qld branch and overseas. She recently received Teaching excellence Award from The University of Queensland based on her contribution to dental education.
