Course Overview
This course will equip dental assistants with the skills to confidently take alginate dental impressions when directed in the clinical environment. It is aimed at providing dental assistants with additional knowledge and skills when taking preliminary alginate impressions, focussing on improving techniques and clinical outcomes.
The course will begin with a lecture-based session before applying this theory through hands-on exercises with other participants in the course. The topics covered are:
- Material properties and handling
- Clinical technique
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of different impression taking materials
- Select the appropriate impression tray tailored to the patient
- Identify common impression taking errors and implement procedures to avoid them
- Discuss methods to manage an anxious patient
- Consistently take upper and lower alginate impressions
- Assess the quality of impressions by noting anatomical features that should be present
Presenter biography
Professor Ian Meyers OAM
BDSc, FRACDS, FICD, FADI, FPFA
Professor Ian Meyers is a general dental practitioner in Brisbane, Australia, and an honorary professor at The University of Queensland School of Dentistry. Professor Meyers has over thirty five years of combined experience in dental research and education, and with clinical dentistry in private practice, university clinics and hospital based dental clinics. He is a Fellow and Board Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and of the International College of Dentists, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has served on numerous ADA national committees and is a long standing member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Australian Dental Journal. In 2017 he received the Order of Australia Medal for services to dentistry, to professional associations, and to tertiary education.
Professor Meyers has extensive experience in comprehensive patient care, and has a special interest in diagnosis and management of worn and broken down dentition, geriatric and aged care dentistry, adhesive restorative dental materials, fibre-reinforced composites, and the management of patients through minimum intervention dentistry.
