Drug Interactions Dentists Must Know

Drug Interactions Dentists Must Know
This lecture is designed for Dentists.

Course Overview

Administration of more than one drug at a time is a frequent event. It can occur simply by taking a medicine with a cup of coffee or in the complicated context of a person on multiple medicines per day. Even though dentists prescribe a narrow range of medicines, how often do you really assess the compatibility of these with the medicines the patient is already on? Do you investigate the interaction of these medicines with food, herbal medicines, vitamins or fruit juices?  What resources do you use to investigate drug interactions?

In this presentation A/Prof Moses will provide an overview of the current concepts in drug interactions and the clinically relevant interactions with drugs used in dentistry. Interactions with fruit juices (way beyond grapefruit juice) and complementary medicines will also be discussed.

This presentation will help you unravel the mysteries of drug interactions and show you how to determine which interactions to worry about and which can be ignored. Topics covered include:

  • Drug-drug and drug-disease interactions.
  • Pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic interactions.
  • Drugs which affect NSAIDs, paracetamol, codeine, antibiotics and local anaesthetics.
  • Interactions with fruit juice, smoking, alcohol, complementary medicines.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this seminar, attendees will be able to

  • Understand the value of analysing interactions as dynamic vs kinetic
