- Scene Brief, Post Mortem Brief: charting conventions, photography protocol,
- DNA in DVI,
- Dental age estimation using OPGs (Dentists only),Ante Mortem brief, chart transcription and reconciliation (Dentists only)
Learning OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Provision of detailed background in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI),
- For Dentists, in-depth training permitting the attendee to be an effective member of a DVI team,
- For Staff, acquire the capacity to be an effective member of a Forensic Odontology Identification Team,
- Receive comprehensive manual and digital resources.
Speaker Biography
A/Prof Alex Forrest
MDSc, GCEd, FFOMP(RCPA), FICD
Alex is well recognised for his expertise in Human Anatomy, Forensic Odontology, Human Forensic Identification, including 3-D technologies and Bite Mark Analysis. He is currently Honorary Associate Professor for the School of Dentistry with University of Queensland, Adjunct Associate Professor of Forensic Odontology with Griffith University, and Director of Forensic Odontology at Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services.
Dr Alistair Soon
BDSc, MForensMed
Alistair Soon is a dental officer practising general dentistry at Metro South Oral Health (Queensland Health), and forensic dentistry at Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services. He is credentialed by Queensland Health to provide specialist-level forensic odontology in Queensland. Alistair was involved in several DVI (Disaster Victim Identification), including as the Odontology Team Leader in air crash incidents. Alistair is a Royal Australian Air Force specialist reserve dental officer. He deployed with the Historic Unrecovered War Casualties - Air Force (HUWC-AF) on a Search and Recovery mission in Indonesia. In 2020, he also had the opportunity to deploy to Afghanistan as a dental officer. Alistair has presented extensively on DVI, including at INTERPOL and NATO conferences.
Dr Neil Evans
Neil completed a Bachelor of Forensic Science at Griffith University in 2009. Following this he went on to complete his dental training, also at Griffith University, in 2014.
Alongside working as a general dentist in private practice Neil has also been employed as a Dental Officer (Forensic) at Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services since 2016. In this role Neil participates in the provision of coronial forensic dental services which have included routine dental identification, dental age estimation, dentally-related pathology consultation and Disaster Victim Identification.
Dr Annu Nangia
BSc BDSc MDSc
Dr Nangia received her Bachelor of Dental Science degree from the University of Melbourne and obtained her Masters of Dental Science in Orthodontics from the University of Sydney in 2001.
Dr Nangia also received a Bachelor of Science degree from Monash University in Melbourne. Dr Nangia began her career as a dentist with Queensland Health in 1996, working in Hervey Bay and Indooroopilly before commencing a specialist orthodontic practice in Brisbane in 2001 with Dr Peter Keay.
Dr Nangia is a member of the Australian Dental Association, past president of the Australian Society of Orthodontics (Queensland), and a Fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists. Dr Nangia is currently president of Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (Queensland). Dr Nangia has scope of practice in forensic dentistry. When Dr Nangia is not involved with the practice, she enjoys spending time with her family and hiking.

Dr Brad Ross
Dr Brad Ross graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 1993, a BDSc(Hons) from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2006 and a Master of Forensic Medicine (MForensMed) from Monash University in 2015. He also graduated from the Royal Military College (RMC-Duntroon) in 1994 and has served as an Army Officer in various roles including Aviation, Medical, Intelligence and more recently Dental Corps. He has worked part-time as a member of the Forensic Odontology team in Brisbane at Queensland Health Forensic Scientific Services (FSS) since 2010. He has participated in several Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) operations in Queensland, including several light plane crashes and the Slacks Creek House Fire in 2011. On behalf of the State Coroner, he has also been involved with the identification of repatriated Australian Army soldiers, deceased whilst deployed on operations in the Middle East. He recently graduated from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at Bond University in 2020 and is currently completing his Residency at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) in 2022. He is also part of the ADF’s Graduate Medical Scheme (GMS) and is looking forward to returning to full-time service as an Army Medical Officer in 2024. His interests include antemortem analysis and promoting the maintenance of adequate dental records to assist with Forensic Odontology casework.
Dr Jane Kim
BOH(DentSci) GradDip(ClinDent) MForensMed
Dr Jane Kim graduated from Griffith University in 2012. Since then she has been working in private practice in Brisbane. Finding an interest in forensic dentistry soon after graduation, Jane has been involved with the forensic team at the Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services since 2016 and became a forensic dental officer in 2020. During this time, Jane completed her Masters of Forensic Medicine (Odontology) from Monash University.
Also joined by Prof Peter Ellis (Forensic Pathologist), Snr Sgt Ritchie Callaghan (DVI Police), DNA specialist FSQ.
