Silver Fluoride Workshop- Special Needs & Geriatric Patients
This workshop is designed for the whole team including, dentists, oral health therapists, dental therapists, hygienists, practice managers and dental assistants.

Course Overview

Poor oral hygiene and disease can be more prevalent in ageing patients or those with disabilities. This workshop will provide clinicians with the awareness and practical solutions to assess, improve and maintain
the oral health needs of the ageing and or disabled patient.

Session 1: Geriatric Patient 

  • Ageing population and the role of the dentist
  • Risk assessment and treatment planning
  • Preventative treatment options for maintaining oral health in older patients including skills to assist patients with cognitive disabilities.
  • Silver Fluoride workshop.

Session 2: Special Needs Patient

  • Theoretical knowledge of the challenges relating to oral disease in special needs patients  
  • Communication techniques with the patient and when appropriate, the carer/family member/guardian.
  • Workshop instructing carers on oral health care techniques.

Session 3: Workshop - Wheelchairs and transfers to Dental Chairs demonstration with Occupational Therapist

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Tailor preventative treatment plan taking into consideration developing medical and cognitive disorders 
  • Critically analyse a patients special needs in order to create a multidisciplinary oral health care plan
  • Define special needs dentistry.

 

Presenter biography

Dr Matthew Nangle


Dr Matthew Nangle is a general dentist working in private practice in Brisbane’s inner suburbs. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the UQ School of Dentistry, where he is the BDSc(Hons) Phase 1 Program Coordinator and External Engagement Coordinator. Matthew also holds an Honours degree in Neuroscience and PhD in Biomedical Sciences. He is the Oral Health Lead for the Queensland Multidisciplinary Initiative for Neurocognitive Disorders, with specific interest in links between oral health and dementia, as well as in people with multiple sclerosis.


Dr Lydia See

Graduated in 2010 from the University of Western Australia, Lydia has since focused her clinical practice in the areas of special care dentistry (namely with medically complex/compromised, head and neck cancer, dental phobias and geriatric populations) and community dentistry (namely in coordination of volunteering projects for disadvantaged populations). Pursuing a much love passion, in 2018, she completed a Masters of Science in Geriatric Dentistry at the University of Southern California. Lydia’s experience has spanned across the public and private sectors in general practice and hospital dentistry as well as tertiary education sector as a clinical tutor and senior lecturer. She is currently undertaking post graduate studies in Special Needs Dentistry. In her spare time, Lydia likes to hang out with friends and source the best vegetarian restaurants. 




Dr David Fu

Dr David Fu is a Dental Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry (SND). He graduated from the University of Queensland for both his Bachelor of Dental Science and Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry). He is passionate about helping individuals with special needs achieve their best dental outcomes. Dr David is calm, genuine and caring. His extensive understanding of special needs and complex conditions ensures a successful and lasting professional relationship.




Dr Elizabeth Milford

Dr Elizabeth Milford is a lecturer at both the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland in clinical communication and ethics, as well as a national speaker. 
 
She is an experienced consultant in dental regulatory compliance, working as an auditor and educator approved by the Dental Board of Australia in Victoria and other jurisdictions. 
 
She is the Professional and Academic Relations Consultant for Oral-B to Australia and New Zealand and brings with her a passion for prevention and evidence-based dentistry.
