Course Overview

By the end of this course, participants will be able to visually build a 3D model of the head and neck starting from the bony skeleton through to muscles, blood vessels, nerves and all the way out to skin layers. A group discussion will facilitate the opportunity to apply this knowledge to clinical considerations related to dental practice, as well as tips and tricks to keep in mind to avoid some clinical complications.

The course consists of four online lectures on Wednesdays 6:30pm – 8:30pm (QLD time) with online weekly quizzes and a final quiz (80% pass mark) before CPD points are awarded. 

Lecture schedule:
Week One (23 November)
Facial Bone Skeleton (90 minutes) Interactive Q and A with Dr Bakr (30 minutes) Online Quiz (30 minutes) - Non graded, multiple attempts allowed.

Week Two (30 November)
Basic Facial Anatomy-Skin Layers and Musculature (90 minutes) Interactive Q and A with Dr Bakr (30 minutes) Online Quiz (30 minutes)-Non graded, multiple attempts allowed.

Week Three (7 December)
Arteries, Veins and Nerves of the face (90 minutes) Interactive Q and A with Dr Bakr (30 minutes) Online Quiz (30 minutes) - Non graded, multiple attempts allowed.

Week Four (14 December)
Advanced Pan Facial Anatomy (90 minutes) Interactive Q and A with Dr Bakr (30 minutes) Online Quiz (30 minutes) - Non graded, multiple attempts allowed.

Final Quiz
To be completed within 10 days of final lecture 80% pass mark. Three attempts allowed.

Lectures will be presented via Zoom (not recorded so attendance on the evening is required) and quizzes will be completed through Canvas, an online learning platform. Further information regarding the course and how to access the lectures and exams will be provided closer to the first lecture taking place.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will learn:

• After the completion of the course participants will be able to:
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the facial anatomy. 
• Identify different facial bones and their relevance to different clinical scenarios.
• Use facial bones as anatomical landmarks / reference points for skin and musculature.  
• Develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between arteries, veins and nerves with oral and dental structures. 
• Apply the principal of 3D anatomical modelling to their clinical practice in relevant procedures.

Presenter biography

Dr Mahmoud Bakr

Dr. Bakr is the Director of Clinical Education (Dentistry) and a Senior Lecturer in General Dental Practice at the School of Dentistry and Oral health – Griffith University. He received his Bachelor Degree in Dental Medicine and Surgery from Cairo University in 2004 and completed his Master Degree in 2010. In 2012, Dr. Bakr was appointed as a full-time Lecturer in General Dental Practice with a special in teaching Oral Biology and Head and Neck Anatomy. In 2014, Dr. Bakr completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2019. Currently, Dr. Bakr is an accredited examiner for the Australian Dental Council Examination for overseas training dentists. Besides his teaching commitments, Mahmoud remains to be a clinician and undergoes private dental practice within Griffith University Dental Clinics. He has also published over 35 peer reviewed journal articles in different fields including the effect of Botulinum Toxin on different oral tissues.
