Managing Medical Emergencies Before the Cavalry Arrives
This lecture is designed for dentists and their dental teams.

Course overview

As health care providers, the oral health team treats a board spectrum of patients who present with significant co-morbidity. These medical conditions come with increased risk in having a medical emergency during treatment or whilst in care. It is a community expectation that, as a health care provider, the oral health team can manage such emergencies until emergency services take over. 

This course seeks to provide participants with the knowledge to develop their skill set to meet not only the mandatory Board requirements but also the community expectations in the area of medical emergencies in the dental surgery. The course will provide participants with simply protocols, in line with their basic skill sets, to deal with common medical emergencies. Furthermore, there will be a practical component involving defibrillation.
 

Learning Objectives

  • Identifying the risk patients and staff pose
  • Recognising the importance of appropriate protocols
  • Recognising the importance of teamwork and the need to practice as a team 
  • Knowing your emergency equipment and drugs, and 
  • Provide an emergency protocol for medical emergencies

Presenter Biography

Dr Greg Mahoney 
BDSc, GradDipClinDent, MSc(Dent), PhD, FADI, FPFA and President of ASDA

He is a highly experienced dentist with over 40 years’ experience and holds a number of key positions in prominent dental associations in Australia. His ongoing education has kept him at the forefront of new developments in dentistry such as ‘sleep dentistry’ and developing better methods of predicting when patients are likely to develop dental issues between normally scheduled dental appointments.

Greg first established in Manly after a stint in private practice in Mount Isa and was drawn to the sea air and boats after the long hot dry summers of the North West. Since coming to Manly, Greg has combined his love of sailing boats, the air force, and academic pursuits with vigor.
