How to meet your Professional and Regulatory Obligations
This lecture is designed for dental practitioners including hygienists and oral health therapists.

Course Overview

This presentation will show you how to use ADA item numbers appropriately so that you don’t end up being the subject of an audit by health funds or Medicare.

You will gain an  understanding of how to comply with all the rules around claiming for treatment under the CDBS, including how to make sure that your clinical records comply with the standards that Medicare requires.

Health fund audits can be one of the most stressful events in your professional life, learn how to avoid being audited, and to make sure that your clinical records are sufficient to defend you in the event of an audit.

The Dental Board of Australia has recently released a revised Code of Conduct, check that you are compliant with all of your professional obligations.

Ensure that you understand what the regulator expects of you as a dental practitioner, including professional boundaries, informed consent and clinical records.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • identify the appropriate ADA item number for your clinical treatment
  • understand how to comply with CDBS billing requirements
  • apply the concept of clinically relevant treatment when claiming under CDBS
  • understand why health funds conduct audits and how you can stay on the bell curve
  • implement the updated DBA Code of Conduct in your daily practicing life
  • identify your regulatory obligations regarding consent and dental records
 

Presenter/s biography

Dr Martin Webb

BDSc (HONS) Qld 1990  FICD FPFA FADI  MAICD

Dr Martin Webb is a dentist in private practice on the Sunshine Coast. He has served in the past as the ADA Federal Vice President, the ADAQ State President, is currently the Vice Chair of the ADA Schedule and Third Party Committee and an ADA Federal Councillor for Queensland. He has conducted CPD lectures for over 10 years for ADAQ, and recently for ADA Victoria, University of Sydney, UWA dental school, UQ dental school, DHAA and ADOHTA. Dr Webb acts as an AHPRA auditor, mentor and educator to assist dentists with conditions on their registration. As a member of the ADAQ Peer review panel, he provides advice to ADAQ staff working to assist dentists with health fund audits, AHPRA complaints and Professional Indemnity insurance legal claims. Dr Webb serves on the Australian Government Professional Services Review Panel, to review inappropriate Medicare billing under the CDBS. In 2023 he was appointed to the ADC examiner panel.

He provides expert opinion reports for professional indemnity insurance lawyers, and has worked in the past as a clinical expert for OHO, the co-regulators in Qld. Dr Webb is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In 2022, Dr Webb was appointed as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Dentistry.
