Advanced Local Anaesthetic
This hands-on course is designed for Dentists, Oral Health Therapists, Dental Therapists and Hygienists.

Course Overview

Pain control is central to enabling clinicians to provide dental treatment and to reduce the suffering of patients. This course will assist in building the knowledge and skills required to successfully administer and manage local anaesthesia for routine dental procedures. 

This course will cover:

  • Anatomy structures important for administering local anaesthesia
  • Pharmacology of local anaesthesia
  • Local anaesthesia block techniques and clinical considerations 
  • Hands-on experience with various methods of local anaesthetic, including posterior lingual infiltration, and transverse cervical blocks. 
  

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe and identify principal and accessory nerve supplies to relevant dental and paradental structures
  • Describe, evaluate, and implement common techniques in the delivery of local anaesthetics for dental procedures as appropriate
  • Apply knowledge of accessory nerve supplies to successfully deliver local anaesthetics  
  • Identify and manage any potential complications that can arise in routine dental local anaesthesia procedures 
 

Presenter/s biography

Associate Professor Alex Forrest AO


Alex is well recognised for his expertise in Human Anatomy, Forensic Odontology, Human Forensic Identification, including 3-D technologies and Bite Mark Analysis. He is currently Honorary Associate Professor for the School of Dentistry with University of Queensland, Adjunct Associate Professor of Forensic Odontology with Griffith University, and Director of Forensic Odontology at Health Support Queensland Forensic and Scientific Services. 

Alex also convenes the annual Disaster Victim Identification course for ADAQ.

 

 Associate Professor Anthony Lynham

Anthony completed his surgical training in Maxillofacial surgery in Queensland. A Fellowship visit to Switzerland enabled him to gain further experience in this fascinating surgical field. Dr Lynhams’ experience includes dento-alveolar surgery, dental implants, wisdom teeth, facial trauma and reconstruction, sleep apnoea surgery, orthognathic surgery, bone grafting and oro-facial pathology. He has a special interest in orbital surgery , trauma surgery and post traumatic facial reconstructive surgery.

Anthony has returned to practice after serving as a senior government minister. It was here that significant legislative reforms were implemented to lessen the incidence of trauma in our society. He now serves as clinical director at the Jamieson Trauma Institute.
