Emergency care nightmares: managing periodontal pain presentations!

Course Overview

Emergency appointments can be difficult and stressful! It is an unplanned scenario where you as a clinician are faced with a distressed patient who is in severe pain seeking immediate relief of their symptoms. As a clinician, the pressure is on and you are expected to swiftly collect the relevant history and clinical information, come up with a differential diagnosis, establish the correct cause of pathology and quickly present the patient with relevant treatment options... and then complete the therapy in a short period of time. You are challenged to think about prognosis, time, cost and future implications in the matter of a few minutes whilst deciphering potentially ambiguous information and clinical presentations. This seminar by Dr Marina Kamel is aimed at assisting you with navigating this clinical, therapeutic and logistics minefield. Dr Kamel will discuss the nature and physiology of periodontal pain. She will discuss various acute periodontal conditions, their diagnostic criteria, and their management. She will also provide management strategies for the emergency appointment as well as discuss the referral timelines.

Learning Objectives

  • What is periodontal pain
  • Acute periodontal conditions and their management
  • Diagnostic criteria and frameworks when faced with a distressed patient
  • Management strategies for the emergency appointment
  • Referral timelines and workflow
