The Interdisciplinary Aspects of Autotransplantation

Tooth autotransplantation is the technique of transplanting embedded, impacted or erupted teeth from one site into another in the same individual. Compromised first permanent molars, congenitally missing teeth, impacted canines and traumatic tooth injuries all represent relatively common clinical dilemmas. Autotransplantation of teeth can provide unrivalled biological solutions in both the anterior and posterior regions of the dentition, particularly for adolescent patients. 

It is important to acknowledge that all clinical procedures have costs, risks, advantages and disadvantages. Trials, tribulations and failures will inevitably occur and autotransplantation may not necessarily represent the ideal option for every clinical dilemma. Interdisciplinary consultation and collaboration are vital for planning potential autotransplantation cases and to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Successful tooth autotransplantation in growing patients provides ongoing root development, maintains alveolar bone and periodontal health, and does not preclude future orthodontic tooth movement. The phenomenal value of autotransplantation for growing patients requires due recognition and appreciation, as this procedure permits cost-effective dental recycling and ideal rehabilitation using the most biocompatible material available, the patient’s own natural tooth.

presenter BIOGRAPHY

Dr Desmond Ong
BDSc(Hons), MDSc(Ortho), MOrthRCS(Ed), MRACDS(Ortho)

Desmond Ong is currently a Clinical Academic in the Discipline of Orthodontics at the University of Queensland School of Dentistry, where he is involved in both the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Orthodontic Curriculum. https://researchers.uq.edu.au/researcher/13551
Many of Desmond’s peer-reviewed publications have focused on the various treatment options for compromised teeth and the benefits of interdisciplinary management for patients with advanced dental needs.
Desmond is also in full-time specialist orthodontic private practice in Townsville and a visiting specialist for Queensland Health in Brisbane (Metro North). Desmond is a past recipient of the Raj Prasad Award from the Australian Society of Orthodontists and the Emerging Lecturer Award from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

 

Dr Rachel Hsieh

Dr Jen-Ti (Rachel) Hsieh is an oral & maxillofacial surgeon working in both public and private practice in Brisbane. She is the supervisor of trainee at Logan Hospital and a senior lecturer at University of Queensland. 

Dr Hsieh practices the full scope of oral & maxillofacial surgery with special interests in in autotransplantation of teeth in children and adults. She was an award recipient at the 2024 World Congress on Dental Trauma in Tokyo for presenting her work on autotransplantation in mature apex teeth.

 

Dr Michael Mandikos
BDSc (Hons), MS (New York), Cert Pros, FRACDS, FICD

Dr. Mandikos is a registered specialist in Prosthodontics.

Michael received his Bachelor of Dental Science Degree with Honours, from the University of Queensland and in 1998 he completed a three-year residency program at the State University of New York at Buffalo (USA), graduating with a Certificate in Prosthodontics and Masters Degree in Biomaterials. He has researched composite resin materials and published research papers in Australian and international journals on clinical and dental materials topics, as well as many clinical technique articles in local dental magazines. 

He is a Reviewer for four dental Journals and is a product evaluator for several dental companies. Michael has presented continuing education programs at Dental meetings throughout Australia, Southeast Asia, Greece, Antarctica and the USA and maintains a Private Practice limited to Implant and Restorative Dentistry in Graceville in Brisbane’s Inner West. 


Dr Bill Kahler

BDSc FRACDS MScDent DClinDent PhD MRACDS (Endo) FICD

Dr Kahler graduated from the University of Queensland dental school in 1983. Bill practised in private care all around Australia for a number of years before training for a clinical doctorate in Endodontics.

He has an active interest in Endodontic research, publishing clinical research and case reports in dentistry, material science and engineering journals. He teaches and lectures locally and internationally, and acts as a reviewer for a number of leading dental journals.

Bill has received a number of Fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the International College of Dentists. He has taught at the University of Adelaide and the University of Queensland, where he acted as Director of the Post-Graduate Programme. In addition to his private practice, Bill works at a specialist paediatric government clinic as an Endodontic Consultant. In his spare time, Bill enjoys relaxing with his family, travel, food and skiing.
