Presenter biography

Dr Unni Pillai
MDS, MSc (Manchester), FRACDS, FRACDS(Endo)

Unni has been a specialist endodontist since 2001 and divides his time as a clinical educator and private practitioner. He is currently a tenured senior lecturer at the School of Dentistry, The University of Queensland and supervises post graduate endodontic trainees through his position as specialist endodontist with Queensland Health. He is an examiner for RACDS, a member of scientific advisory panel of Journal of Endodontics and the Senior Editor of Clinical Case Reports (Wiley). He has a special interest in cracked teeth and is currently pursuing his PhD with the School of Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering, University of Sydney on the “Biomechanics of cracked teeth”.

 

Dr Lydia See

Dr Lydia See is a specialist in Special Needs Dentistry, dedicated to delivering accessible oral health care for individuals facing unique challenges. She is currently a fellow of the International College of Dentists, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and Higher Education Academy. 
Lydia's clinical experience ranges across public, hospital, private, and not-for-profit/volunteering sectors. She thrives on complex cases and is always seeking holistic, compassionate, and innovative approaches to support both her patients and the broader community in achieving optimal oral health outcomes.


Currently, Lydia is actively involved in several initiatives spanning service delivery, education, and aged care, and silver fluoride research. Her academic contributions include delivering numerous lectures on Special Needs Dentistry across a range of professional platforms and universities—from local study groups to national and international. Lydia has supervised and examined dental students at both the University of Western Australia and the University of Queensland. Lydia’s current research interests include aged care, population oral health, social impact, and the clinical application of silver fluoride.

Beyond her professional life, she enjoys exploring vegetarian cuisine, as well as indulging in music and theatre.

 

Dr Albert Tran

Graduating in 2008 from the University of Queensland, Dr Albert Tran is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and holds a Graduate Diploma in Implant Dentistry. He maintains a private practice in Brisbane and currently holds appointments with the Australian Dental Council and AHPRA. Albert has held teaching positions at the University of Queensland: School of Dentistry and currently mentors for both ADA and RACDS. He has a keen interest in evidence-based practice, digital privacy and electronic health tools. 

 

Dr Christopher Barker
B.D.S., B.Sc.Dent. (HONS I), D.Clin.Dent. (Perio), FRACDS

Dr Chris Barker is a Queensland-based periodontist who specialises in the full scope of specialist periodontics treatment methods. He is passionate about staying up to date with new treatments and technologies that assist in providing positive patient outcomes and experiences. Chris is one of only a few specialists’ periodontists in Australia able to provide LANAP® – a minimally invasive laser periodontal treatment. His practice, Proactive Perio, offers Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) which is one of the latest technologies in dental hygiene treatments.

He graduated from dental school at the University of Adelaide in 2004 and was awarded First Class Honours for completion of an honours research program in 2005. He completed his Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry, specialising in Periodontology, at Griffith University in 2014. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and has completed the Long Surgical Course Certified from the International Team for Implantology (ITI).

He is also a published author and his research on modifying factors of bone resorption and bone production has been presented at domestic and international conferences. He received research grants from the Australian Periodontology Research Foundation and the Australian Society of Orthodontics.

 

A/Prof Sobia Zafar
BDS, MSc, DClinDent (Paediatric Dentistry), PhD, FICD, FPFA, FDTFEd, SFHEA, MRACDS (Paediatric Dentistry)

Sobia Zafar is a specialist paediatric dentist and leads the Discipline of Paediatric Dentistry at The University of Queensland. Sobia completed her DClinDent and PhD at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and her expertise spans dental education, digital dentistry, and children's oral health, including care for those with special needs. A sought-after speaker both nationally and internationally, she is renowned for her engaging CPD courses on pulpotomies, stainless-steel crowns, minimally invasive dentistry, and pain/behaviour management in paediatric patients. Her CPD courses equip dental professionals with practical skills and evidence-based knowledge, showcasing her innovative teaching and leadership in paediatric dental education.

In research, Sobia has over 100 publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, thesis and numerous papers. She has successfully supervised 46 Honours students and ten PhD, MPhil, and DClinDent candidates, earning her the "Best Research Supervisor Award" twice. Her teaching excellence is further highlighted by awards such as the UQ Teaching Excellence Award (2022) and Fellowships from the Faculty of Dental Trainers, Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (2022), and the Pierre Fauchard Academy fellowship.

 

Ms. Larissa Alderton
BoralH, MHM, ADAQ Compliance & Advisory Services Manager

Larissa graduated with a Bachelor of Oral Health in Oral Health Therapy and Master of Health Management, with a focus on health care law and ethics and research. Larissa has worked in the dental profession since 2004 with experience in private practice, the University sector and the NHS in the United Kingdom. Larissa’s academic background and clinical experience puts her in an ideal position to assist ADAQ members with patient complaints, health fund audits, regulatory notification and insurance queries.
