Consolidation of Oral Surgery for General Practitioners

This 2-day workshop is suitable for registered dentists only

COURSE SUMMARY

This Course consist of 3 Model based modules and a 2 day Cadaver based module designed to consolidate undergraduate and early career experience in Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery knowledge and techniques for the General Dental Practitioner. 

The Course will provide updated review of important aspects of patient management required to safely carry out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures in the General Dental Practice Setting.

The Course will provide a review of potential complications which may arise when carrying out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures in the General Dental Practice Setting to assist attendees in case selection and communication with their patients.

This course is not intended to expand scope of practice. 

By providing knowledge review and hands on practical experience the course will assist practitioners in defining their own scope of practice in order to meet their obligations under the Dental Board of Australia’s Registration Standards.

day 1

course overview

Attendees will review the Dental Board of Australia’s Guidelines for Scope of Practice in relation to Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.

Attendees will be provided updates on aspects of medical history and patient management relevant to Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.

Attendees will review dental anatomy relevant to Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.

Attendees will carry out several practical exercises utilising models focusing on safe use of hand and rotary instruments in carrying out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.

Attendees will:

  • Attendees will be able to discuss their obligations under AHPRA (Dental Board) Scope of Practice Registration Standard
  • Attendees will be able to identify appropriate instruments and sutures to close intra oral incisions.
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate tying of a square knot and be able to recognise incorrect knot formation
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate correct handling of needle holders and tissue forceps to close a dental extraction site
  • Attendees will be able to evaluate dentoalveolar anatomical patterns and devise treatment strategies to assist in carrying out minor oral surgery procedures based on this anatomy
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate safe and effective bone removal techniques to assist in the removal of single rooted teeth
  • Attendees will be able to correctly apply Warwick James and Coupland pattern elevators in carrying out exodontia Procedures
  • Attendees will be able to apply the principles of piezo surgery instrument operation and application
  • Attendees will demonstrate the correct application of root picks in retrieving root fragments
  • Attendees will recognise the important aspects of obtaining a valid informed consent
  • Attendees will be able to identify significant features of a patient’s medical history when formulating a safe treatment plan Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures
  • Attendees will recognise common errors in tooth sectioning
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate safe and effective techniques in sectioning single rooted teeth to assist in their removal
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate safe and effective techniques in sectioning multirooted lower molar teeth to assist in their removal

day 2

course overview

Attendees will be provided instruction on case selection for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery for the General Dental Practitioner.

Attendees will carry out several practical exercises utilising models focusing on removal of multi rooted teeth.

Attendees will be provided updates on medical management of patients for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery

Attendees will be provided instruction on suturing and carry out practical exercises using models and animal specimens to consolidate skills in suture placement and tying.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Attendees will:

  • Attendees will recognise some indicators of surgical difficulty when assessing patients for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures.
  • Attendees will recognise some common errors made by dental practitioners leading them to elect to treat cases not suitable for the General Dental practitioner rather than appropriately refer.
  • Attendees will be able to discuss indications and techniques for preservation of bone when removing teeth
  • Attendees will demonstrate the correct use of the Piezosurgery extraction blade to minimise bone trauma
  • Attendees will demonstrate correct tissue handling and suture tying technique
  • Attendees will be able to recognise the generic and brand names of medications commonly prescribed in Australia which may increase risk of osteonecrosis
  • Attendees will be able to categorise medications commonly prescribed in Australia which may increase risk of osteonecrosis by level of risk
  • Participants will demonstrate the use of the Piezosurgery extraction blade to remove a single tooth root whilst preserving bone.
  • Attendees will be able to discuss the elements of a valid informed consent
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate safe and effective techniques in sectioning multirooted upper molar teeth to assist in their removal
  • Attendees will recognise generic and brand names of common anticoagulant drugs prescribed in Australia
  • Attendees will be able to formulate an appropriate treatment strategy for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery patients taking Anticoagulant medication
  • Attendees will be able to demonstrate safe and effective techniques in sectioning multirooted lower molar teeth to assist in their removal
  

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES

Dr Barbara Woodhouse

Dr. Barbara Woodhouse graduated in dentistry from the University of Queensland in 1978 and worked for Queensland Health and in private practice – both in rural Queensland and in Brisbane – before deciding to specialise in oral and maxillofacial surgery.  After completing a Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, she returned to the University of Queensland to teach and to complete a Masters degree in oral and maxillofacial surgery in combination with a four-year surgical training program, initially at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.  To broaden her experience, Dr. Woodhouse completed her final year in a world class training facility in the United Kingdom and was admitted to Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. 

She was awarded a traveling Fellowship to Europe in recognition of the work she undertook in England. On her return to Australia, Dr. Woodhouse commenced private practice in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  At the same time she completed a medical degree through the University of Queensland and was awarded a specialist Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. 

She was appointed as a consultant at the Royal Brisbane Hospital from 1994 to 2009, where she pioneered several techniques not previously performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons in Queensland. She has also served as Lieutenant Colonel Consultant to the Australian Army, and has served on the national board of examiners for doctors applying for specialist registration in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. She is a frequently invited speaker to medical and dental groups both in Australia and overseas. 

Dr. Barbara Woodhouse frequently travels overseas to extend her skills and training and is the chair of Operation Interface, (an NGO affiliated with the International Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons) which supervises the supply of surgical expertise to Bangladesh, Cambodia Fiji, Tonga, PNG, Vietnam and Vanuatu and initiates and supports training programs for local surgeons in these areas 

Dr. Woodhouse practices all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery but has a special interest in the correction of facial deformities. 

 

Dr Alistair Reid

BDS MBBS FRACDS(OMS)

Dr Reid is in full-time private practice at Brisbane OMS and also regularly lectures dental students in Oral Surgery at UQ School of Dentistry. Dr Reid completed his Dental degree in 1993 at The University of Adelaide and moved to Brisbane immediately after as a Dental Officer with The Australian Regular Army. He remained serving as a Dental Officer until 1998 and then spent some time working in the UK and Northern NSW. In 2000 Dr Reid began his Medical degree at The University of Queensland and continued his post-graduate training in Medicine and eventually Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Queensland. Dr Reid began specialist practice in 2010 at Brisbane OMS and The Princess Alexandra Hospital. He was the Supervisor of Training for OMS trainees at The Princess Alexandra Hospital until he moved to full-time private practice in 2022. Dr Reid is experienced in all aspects of OMS but has particular interests in dento-alveolar surgery, implant surgery, trauma and orthognathic surgery.
