Aim

Provide dental staff with updates in infection prevention and control standards and guidelines.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course will discuss recent developments in infection control and their practical implementation in the dental practice. ADAQ recommends Members regularly attend CPD sessions for infection control to ensure they remain up-to-date and compliant with new guidelines.

This course will cover:

  • Latest information on developments in key national documents including the Australian Standard AS5369 and its implementation into clinics, ADA Guidelines 2024, NHMRC guidelines 2020, CDNA guidelines 2019, Immunize Australia guidelines, and the ACSQHC National Health Safety Standards and accreditation 2024 advisories.
  • How to best use the 2024 ADA Guidelines and associated resources (the Self-Assessment Tool and the Infection Control Practical Guide)
  • Infection Control Management Plan: Queensland requirements
  • Workflow for reprocessing
  • Mechanical cleaning systems and assessing their performance
  • Design elements, segregation and air movement in the reprocessing area
  • Water quality for reprocessing and for steam generation
  • Documentation and records for reprocessing
  • Steriliser performance tests and validation
  • Common errors in reprocessing
 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Update practice documentation in response to changes in guidelines 
  • Identify areas of risk for compliance purposes 
  • Evaluate risks to create transmission-based precautions 
  • Create an infection control protocol that meets the requirements of the Qld Infection Control Management Plan 
  • Implement processes that encourage the continuous improvement and application of everyday infection control measures

 

PRESENTER/S BIOGRAPHY

Emeritus Professor Laurence Walsh AO

BDSc, PhD, DDSc, GCEd, FRACDS, FFOP(RCPA), FIADFE, FICD, FADI, FPFA

Laurie Walsh is an internationally recognised expert in infection control in dentistry, who has contributed to the development of infection control protocols, standards and guidelines for over 30 years. He has been the editor of the ADA’s infection control guidelines for the past 13 years, and has served on the ADA Infection Control Committee for almost 30 years, including 8 years as a former chair. Laurie has represented ADA for over 30 years on Standards Australia committees, and served on expert panels for the CDNA and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare.

Laurie has been on the staff of the School of Dentistry at The University of Queensland since 1984, including serving for 10 years as the Head of School, and 21 years as Professor of Dental Science before retiring in late 2020 and becoming an Emeritus Professor. Based on publications and citations, Laurie is ranked in the top 0.25% of scientists worldwide, and in the top 150 dental scientists globally. He was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2018 for his distinguished contributions to dentistry. Laurie is a life member of ADAQ, ADA Inc, and the ANZ Academy of Special Neefs Dentistry. In 2025 he was awarded the Elmer S. Best Memorial Award of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. This annual award is the highest award from the Academy, and recognises distinguished contributions of international significance to dentistry.
