The Ins and Outs of Special Needs & Geriatric Dentistry

This workshop is designed for the whole clinical team including, dentists, oral health therapists, dental therapists, hygienists.

Course Overview

Poor oral hygiene and disease can be more prevalent in older adults patients or those with special needs. This interactive lecture and workshop continual professional development day will provide clinicians with the awareness and practical solutions to assess, improve and maintain the oral health needs of the older adult and or special needs patient.

3. Communication with Medical and Allied Health professionals in Special Needs Dentistry
4. Considerations of patients with different disabilities
5. Case discussions integrated throughout the sessions

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Define special needs dentistry.
  • Understand the special needs and geriatric population.
  • Tailor preventative treatments taking into consideration the patient's medical, psychosocial, and dental needs.
  • Critically analyse a patient's special needs in order to create a multidisciplinary oral health care plan.
  • Recognise the complexity of a special needs patients and when to communicate to other medical and allied health professionals

 

Presenter biography 

Dr Lydia See
BDSc (Hon), MS (Geri Dent), DClinDent (SND) 
GradCertHPEd, D Spec Care Dent RCSEd, FHEA, FICD, FPFA

Dr. Lydia See is a specialist in special needs dentistry with a focus on providing accessible oral health care to individuals with unique challenges. Since graduating from dental school at UWA, Lydia discovered her passion was in special care dentistry, dental education, and community dentistry. Dr. Lydia’s clinical experience spans across diverse settings including public, hospital and private clinical practice. She has actively contributed to tertiary education and research. Dr. Lydia’s current special needs dentistry initiatives are in areas of service delivery, education and silver fluoride research. She also has extensive experience in dental volunteering and working with not-for-profit organisations. Outside of her professional commitments, Lydia enjoys exploring vegetarian culinary delights, music and theatre.



Dr David Fu

Dr David Fu is a Dental Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry (SND). He graduated from the University of Queensland for both his Bachelor of Dental Science and Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry). He is passionate about helping individuals with special needs achieve their best dental outcomes. Dr David is calm, genuine and caring. His extensive understanding of special needs and complex conditions ensures a successful and lasting professional relationship.
