Course overview

  • Scene Brief, Post Mortem Brief: charting conventions, photography protocol,
  • Dental age estimation using OPGs, Ante Mortem brief, chart transcription and reconciliation

 

Learning OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

  • Provision of detailed background in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI),
  • in-depth training permitting the attendee to be an effective member of a DVI team,
  • Receive comprehensive manual and digital resources.

 

Speaker Biography

A/Prof Alex Forrest AO
MDSc, GCEd, FFOMP(RCPA), FICD, FPFA
Alex is well recognised for his expertise in Human Anatomy, Forensic Odontology, Human Forensic Identification, including 3-D technologies and Bite Mark Analysis. He is currently Honorary Associate Professor for the School of Dentistry with University of Queensland, Adjunct Associate Professor of Forensic Odontology with Griffith University, and Director of Forensic Odontology at Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services.




Dr Alistair Soon
BDSc, MForensMed
Al Soon is a Royal Australian Air Force dental officer. He holds a casual position at Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services with specialist-level forensic odontology credentials with Queensland Health. Alistair was involved in several DVI (Disaster Victim Identification), including the Talisman Sabre MRH-90 Taipan helicopter in 2023. He deployed with the Historic Unrecovered War Casualties - Air Force (HUWC-AF) on the Catalina A24-50 Search and Recovery mission in Indonesia. Alistair presented extensively on DVI, such as at INTERPOL and NATO conferences, and also instructed on this topic to the Australian Defence Force (ADF).

Dr Neil Evans
BForSc, BOH(Dsc) GDipDent 
Neil completed a Bachelor of Forensic Science at Griffith University in 2009. Following this he went on to complete his dental training, also at Griffith University, in 2014.

Alongside working as a general dentist in private practice Neil has also been employed as a Dental Officer (Forensic) at Queensland Public Health and Scientific Services since 2016. In this role Neil participates in the provision of coronial forensic dental services which have included routine dental identification, dental age estimation, dentally-related pathology consultation and Disaster Victim Identification.

Dr Annu Nangia
BSc BDSc MDSc
Dr Nangia received her Bachelor of Dental Science degree from the University of Melbourne and obtained her Masters of Dental Science in Orthodontics from the University of Sydney in 2001.

Dr Nangia also received a Bachelor of Science degree from Monash University in Melbourne. Dr Nangia began her career as a dentist with Queensland Health in 1996, working in Hervey Bay and Indooroopilly before commencing a specialist orthodontic practice in Brisbane  in 2001 with Dr Peter Keay.

Dr Nangia is a member of the Australian Dental Association, past president of the Australian Society of Orthodontics (Queensland), and a Fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists. Dr Nangia is currently president of Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society (Queensland). Dr Nangia has scope of practice in forensic dentistry. When Dr Nangia is not involved with the practice, she enjoys spending time with her family and hiking.

Dr Brad Ross

 BSc (UNSW Canberra), BDSc(Hons) (UQ), MD + BMedSt (Bond), MForensMed (Monash),

Dr Brad Ross graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) in 1993, a BDSc(Hons) from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2006 and a Master of Forensic Medicine (MForensMed) from Monash University in 2015.  He also graduated from the Royal Military College (RMC-Duntroon) in 1994 and has served as an Army Officer in various roles including Aviation, Medical, Intelligence and more recently Dental Corps.  He has worked part-time as a member of the Forensic Odontology team in Brisbane at Queensland Health Forensic Scientific Services (FSS) since 2010.  He has participated in several Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) operations in Queensland, including several light plane crashes and the Slacks Creek House Fire in 2011.  On behalf of the State Coroner, he has also been involved with the identification of repatriated Australian Army soldiers, deceased whilst deployed on operations in the Middle East.  He recently graduated from the Doctor of Medicine (MD) program at Bond University in 2020 and is currently completing his Residency at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) in 2022.  He is also part of the ADF’s Graduate Medical Scheme (GMS) and is looking forward to returning to full-time service as an Army Medical Officer in 2024.  His interests include antemortem analysis and promoting the maintenance of adequate dental records to assist with Forensic Odontology casework.

Dr Hai Jiang
DDS Unimelb, BPharm (Hons) UQ
Dr Hai Jiang is the newest member of the Forensic Odontology team led by Associate Professor Alex Forrest. Hai is a forensic dental officer currently studying a Master of Forensic Medicine degree at Monash University. Before joining the Forensic Odontology team, Hai worked in Queensland Health in areas of general dentistry, paediatric dentistry and general anaesthesia. He has also practiced dentistry for a not-for-profit organisation to close the gap in Indigenous health. Hai currently works in both public and private sectors. 
Hai has published multiple academic papers and has experience as a clinical lecturer in dentistry at James Cook University. He is a member of the Australian Dental Association and is a member of the Cadmus Society and Southside Dental Study Club. During his time in university, he was the recipient of the Australian Dental Association Student Research Prize and Queensland Dental Group Student Award.
On his days off, Hai enjoys spending time with his family and a good barbecue by the beach. He has an overly active 4-year-old who keeps him busy.
