Managing Medical Emergencies in the Dental Practice
This event is suitable for all practice staff, including Dentists, Oral Health Therapists, Hygienists, Therapists, Dental Assistants, Practice Managers and Receptionists.

Course overview

As health care providers, the oral health team treats a board spectrum of patients who present with significant co-morbidity. These medical conditions come with increased risk in having a medical emergency during treatment or whilst in care. It is a community expectation that, as a health care provider, the oral health team can manage such emergencies until emergency services take over. 

This half day course seeks to provide participants with the knowledge to develop their skill set to meet professional and  community expectations in the area of medical emergencies in the dental surgery. The course will provide participants with simply protocols, in line with their basic skill sets, to deal with common medical emergencies. The practical component of the course will involve the application of these basic protocols and the use of a defibrillator.

Learning Objectives

1. Identifying the risk patients and staff pose 
2. Recognising the importance of appropriate protocols 
3. Recognising the importance of teamwork and the need to practice as a team 
4. Knowing your emergency equipment and drugs, and 
5. Provide an emergency protocol for medical emergencies 

presenter BIOGRAPHY

Dr Greg Mahoney
BDSc, GradDipClinDent, MSc(Dent), PhD, FADI, FPFA and President of ASDA

Dr Mahoney has a full time private practice dealing with the anxious patient and has been involved in sedation research for the past 14 years. He is a highly experienced dentist with over 30 years experience and holds a number of key positions in prominent dental associations in Australia. His ongoing education has kept him at the forefront of new developments in dentistry such as ‘sleep dentistry’ and developing better methods of predicting when patients are likely to develop dental issues between normally scheduled dental appointments.
