Course overview

The Oral Surgery series of courses consist of 3 Model based modules and a 2-day Cadaver based module, designed to consolidate undergraduate and early career experience in Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery knowledge and techniques for the General Dental Practitioner.

The Course will provide updated review of important aspects of patient management required to safely carry out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures in the General Dental Practice Setting.

The Course will provide a review of potential complications which may arise when carrying out Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery procedures in the General Dental Practice Setting to assist attendees in case selection and communication with their patients.

This course is not intended to expand scope of practice.

By providing knowledge review and hands on practical experience the course will assist practitioners in defining their own scope of practice in order to meet their obligations under the Dental Board of Australia’s Registration Standards.

COURSE Prerequisites

In order to be eligible to attend Oral Surgery Module 2, attendees must have completed Oral Surgery Module 1 or have a minimum of 5 years relevant clinical experience. However it is recommended that all delegates complete each Module in order to get the most of of the learning experience. 

Module 2 OVERVIEW

Attendees will:

  • Be provided instruction on case selection for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery for the General Dental Practitioner.
  • Carry out several practical exercises utilising models focusing on removal of multi rooted teeth.
  • Be provided updates on medical management of patients for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery.
  • Be provided instruction on suturing and carry out practical exercises using models and animal specimens to consolidate skills in suture placement and tying.

At the completion of this course, participants may be interested in attending Oral Surgery - Module 3, and/or Oral Surgery - Module 4, the next courses in this practical series.


Learning Objectives

TOPIC 1 - Treatment Planning for Exodontia and Minor Oral Surgery

  • Review of basic principles of case selection
  • Which cases to refer obligations under DBA standards
  • Common errors resulting in poor case selection and potential consequences

TOPIC 2 - Tooth Sectioning Multi Rooted Teeth

  • Review of Sectioning of Multirooted Teeth
  • Group Exercise - Sectioning of multirooted teeth to assist removal on model

TOPIC 3 - Medical management

  • Management of the anticoagulated patient
  • Group Exercise - Recognising medications associated with increased risk of Osteonecrosis

TOPIC 4 - Suturing

  • Selection of Suture material and needles
  • Techniques for suture placement and tying
  • Group Exercise - Placement and tying of suture on models and Sheep Tongue

TOPIC 5 - Removal of Root Fragments

  • Application of Instruments to assist in removal of retained root fragments
  • Practical Exercise - Application of root tip elevators to remove root fragments on model

This course will be presented by two specialist Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, on behalf of Dental Anatomical Training.
